Wireless Network Client Configuration

Windows XP, Vista and 7

1.  Download and install the server certificate

  • The server certificate has to be installed in your computer. To begin, download this certificate.
  • Double click on it to open.
  • Click on the Install Certificate button and select the Place all certificates in the following store option:
  • Make sure the Show physical stores is enabled, and pick Local Computer under Trusted Root Certification Authorities:

Note: For Windows 7 there will be no option Local computer just install it in the parent location. (Not the smartcard, nor the Registry)

  • It should show you a summary of what you just did. Click Finish so get a pop-up window informing you that the import was successful:

2.  Download and install the client software (Supplicant)

  • As of January 2010 the supplicant software (SecureW2) which we had available for download here cannot be installed anymore. The reason is that the Software company has stopped distributing their client for free and therefore it is not possible to install the client. Right now there is no free available EAP/TTLS software available. However users who already installed the client can continue to use it.
  • Note if you own a Dell or Lenovo laptop you can use their Wireless clients which both should support EAP/TTLS authentication.

3.  Configure Windows XP

  • Click Start then Connect to and finally Show all connections
If the Wireless Network Connection is disabled right click and enable it.
(Otherwise the Wireless Networks tab is not going to be available)
  • Right click on Wireless Network Connection and select Properties. You will see this window:
  • Click the Wireless Networks tab (It might not appear if the connection is not enabled)
  • Click ADD to add a new network connection.
  • SSID: Check on the network you are allowed to work on. Available networks: acad
  • Network Authentication: Open
  • Data encryption: WEP
  • Key is provided for me automatically should be checked.
  • Click the Authentication tab and you will see:
  • Check the box to Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network
  • Select SecureW2 as EAP Type, and click Properties
  • Continue with the next step below.

4.  Configure Windows Vista/7

The following procedure is described for Windows 7 but should be similar for Vista:

  • Go to Control Panel \ Network and Internet \ Manage Wireless Networks
  • Click Add
  • Go to Manually create a network profile
  • Enter acad as Network name
  • Choose 802.1x as Security type
  • Check the box Connect even if the network is not broadcasting
  • Go to Next
  • Click on Change connection settings
  • Click on the Security pane.
  • Choose SecureW2 as authentication method
  • Click on the Settings Button to the right.
  • Create a new profile EECIS
  • Click on the button Specify outer identity and enter the string anonymous.
  • Go to the certificates pane and check Verify server certificate. Add the EECIS certificate. If the certificate doesn't show up in the list please jump to the next section in this document and then proceed with the next step.
  • Go to the Authentication pane and make sure PAP is used.
  • Click OK until all windows are closed.
  • Next then connect to the acad network.
  • Windows will ask you that you need to provide more information to connect to the network.
  • Click on popup dialog and enter your unix username and password (This is your email (@eecis.udel.edu) password/username)

5.  Adding the EECIS certificate under Windows 7 manually

  • Press Win-Key + R
  • Type "mmc" and hit enter
  • Confirm with 'yes'
  • Press CTRL+M to add a snap-in
  • Choose "Certificates"
  • Choose "Computer account"
  • Leave it at "Local computer"
  • Hit ok
  • Expand the "Trusted root certification authorities" and you should see a bunch of pre-installed certificates.
  • Go now to the very right on "more actions" -> "all tasks" -> "import"
  • Choose the ".der" certificate file which you can download at http://www.eecis.udel.edu/wireless/software/root.der
  • Hit the next button until it is imported. It should now show up in the list and you can use it in SecureW2.

6.  Configure the client software and your account information

6.1 The setup for SecureW2 is as follows:

  • To edit your default configuration, click Configure. You will see a window asking for an outer identity. The outer identity should remain as anonymous for old versions (3.12 and below). New versions (newer than 3.12) it is recommended to either "specify outer identity" as "anonymous" OR un-check the "Use Alternate Outer Identity" box. The next picture shows the correct configuration for old versions:
  • Click on the certificates tab and it will automatically show you the certificate you installed before
Note: recent windows updates will require you to click the Add CA button and look for the EECIS Staff certificate and manually add it to the list.
  • Mark the Verify server certificate and click on the certificate (if there are more than one):
  • Double check under the Authentication tab, that the authentication method is set to PAP:
  • You can either provide login information each time your computer gets connected to the network, or save it to your computer so you do not need to type it in every time.
For the first case, check the box Prompt user for credentials under the User Account tab:
For the second case, uncheck the box and fill your Unix information in. Leave the domain field empty:

Note:'

  • A message can appear to process the certificates, install all of them and click ok. (In this case the network you are connecting to is acad, which depends on the network you are able to be connected to)
  • This message appears if you didn't provide your account login and password:
  • Or, this message appears if your login and password is filled in with the UNIX login and password (and Domain empty):

7.  Test your connection

  • Open Firefox or Internet Explorer and see if you can access the internet. Use the Help Request System if you have trouble.
