Introduction

The ECE/CIS labs at UD are maintained jointly between the Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) and the Computer & Information Sciences (CIS) departments. The labs are primarily intended to support the research activities of the two departments.

How To Request An Account

To apply for an account on one of the ECE/CIS machines, complete the account form. ECE/CIS Research Accounts are generally awarded to persons in one of the following categories:

ClassificationWhen Awarded
ECE/CIS FacultyAlways awarded
ECE/CIS Graduate studentAlways awarded
ECE/CIS Undergraduate studentAwarded only if student is doing a project/research for a professor
Semester Class AccountAcademic account always awarded if the applicant is enrolled in the course
OthersAwarded with faculty sponsor

In addition, undergraduates may apply for an ECE-academic/ECL account.

Research vs. Academic Accounts

The ECE-Academic (ECL) accounts are separate accounts from the rest of ECE/CIS. Research account users automatically get ECE-Academic accounts as well. Research accounts have a higher level of access, use the www.eecis.udel.edu domain, and use stimpy or ren for shell access. Academic accounts use the www.ecl.udel.edu or acad.ece domains, and use orioles.acad.ece for shell access.

Remote hosts to use:

stimpy.eecis.udel.eduMain system (Solaris sparc) used for remote access (research accounts only)
ren.eecis.udel.eduMain system (Solaris x86) used for remote access (research accounts only). Load balances between servers ren{1,2}.eecis
hoek.eecis.udel.eduSystem for research accounts for Linux applications. Load balances between servers hoek{1,2}.eecis
orioles.acad.ece.udel.eduPrimary server for Academic class use
mlb.acad.ece.udel.eduPrimary Linux server for Academic class use

Logging In

After the account form is submitted, the forms go to your sponsor for verification. After your sponsor has approved the account, it will go to ECE/CIS staff for creation. Once the ECE/CIS staff receive this form, the account will be created and become active by next day usually.

When you first log in, you will be required to change your password. If you ever need to change your password again, use the `passwd' command. Changes to your password will require a few minutes to take effect.

DO NOT share your password or account with ANYONE

Disk Space

Disk space quota is allocated according to each user's status. (Faculty, Grad, UGrad, Class, etc.) All home directories are accessed through /usa links. Additional disk space can be found via /usb/$USER links. These links should be used instead of the absolute mount points, since they may differ from host to host.

What ECE/CIS Accounts Are For

ECE/CIS accounts allow users to do research oriented computing. This means that computing for personal use is not allowed. (The classic example of personal computing is an undergraduate using the laser printer for generating multiple copies of a resumé.) As an ECE/CIS user, the user must:

  • Use the account for research for the University of Delaware
  • Use the account for the class the Class Account is for
  • Not abuse the equipment of the ECE/CIS lab facilities
  • Be courteous and not put an excessive work load on a host
  • Not allow another person to use his or her account

Anything that violates these rules is considered an abuse of the privilege to use the ECE/CIS computers and will positively result in a reprimand and perhaps stronger action, depending on the severity.

When Accounts Are Removed

The current policy for expiring computer accounts is given here. 'Expiring' an account means backing up its contents onto tape and then removing the account from the system. The backup of an account will be maintained by the staff, and you may be able to retrieve files from an archived account. If you want to be sure of saving a special file it is best to make a copy of the file to a personal machine before your account expires. When an account expires, all files become the property of the University. If there are any files that you want to keep private you must delete them before the account expires. A user account will expire if one of the following occurs:

  • The user leaves either the ECE or CIS department (i.e., graduates)
  • The user violated one of the rules stated in the previous section.

When the account is removed, it may still be online, but the user cannot log in. (In this condition the account is known as starred.) So, if you cannot access your account, act quickly and your account can be restored without much trouble - simply fill out a new account form as described earlier. If it has been some time since your account was removed, it may have to be restored from tape. If your account was expired because of a violation, your account will only be restored if there is a very good reason.

Getting More Info

Users should read the system shared folder in their email client for important news concerning the ECE/CIS systems. Useful online documentation can be found on our documentation wiki.

Resetting either your unix or samba password

If you have forgotten your password, you must stop in at 113 Evans with your photo ID to get it reset. We will not send passwords via email. We will set your password to something temporary. You will be forced to change it the first time you log in.

Problems or Questions?

If you are experiencing a problem, please consult the documentation wiki first. Most common questions have been asked and answered before. If this does not help, then use the Help Request System.
