SunRayQuestions

1.  Solaris Sun Ray Questions

This section offers a brief summary of frequent questions regarding the ECE/CIS Sun Ray computers running Solaris.

2.  Windows Virtual Machine Sunrays

On March 28th 2011 we migrated the Sunrays from using a shared Windows 2008 Server to a per-Sunray Virtual Machine running Windows 7. This means that each Sunray is connected to a virtual machine (VM) in the data center. Initially the VM is setup with a default account. Please ask the labstaff in the help request system for the username and password. This account has administrator right and if you don't want other to login to your Sunray then you should change the username and password as soon as possible. You can simply rename the existing account by running the command compmgmt.msc. Go to Local Users and groups -> users. Select the ECEuser account and press F2. Then you change it to your EECIS user name. This will make printing and mapping the network drive easier than naming it differently. Your Full Name can be anything.

IMPORTANT: Do not work on the local storage. I.e. do store any files you might need later on the computer but work solely on your samba network drive. Please see on how to map your network drive. Of course you can for instance use the local hard drive for download and temporary files as well as applications. The reason we encourage user to use the network drive is that we roll back the VM to previous (working) states if problems (such as Virus/Malware) occur.

3.  Using Removable Storage

It has been found that USB keys and other removable storage crash the Sun Ray - but only if plugged into the USB ports on the keyboard. Simply plug the removable storage into one of the ports on the back of the unit.

After it is plugged in, Solaris will mount your drive automatically. Run df to get the mount point, and access your files from there.

If you are running Windows then the USB flash drive should be mounted automatically.

4.  Connecting to a remote Windows system

The RDP protocol is implemented by two unix programs, rdesktop and uttsc. Note you can only connect to the windows server provided by the department due to security reasons. In the following examples the server gilded-yak.eecis.udel.edu will be used. Open a console and type:

 rdesktop -f -d ECECIS gilded-yak.eecis.udel.edu

to use rdesktop. The option -f will make it run in fullscreen and -d will use the ECECIS domain. Note in order to toggle between full screen and a window press CTRL+ALT+ENTER. Similarly you can use

 uttsc -m gilded-yak.eecis.udel.edu

to exit fullscreen simply move your mouse to the top of the screen and a menu should pop up.

5.  Sun Ray Shortcuts

If a SunRay becomes frozen for some reason you can use either of the following key sequences to reboot the Sun Ray:

  • Stop+A (Sun Keyboard Only) or Ctrl+Pause+A (PC Keyboard)
  • Ctrl+Alt+Backspace+Backspace (Hold control and alt, press backspace twice).

You can find other shortcuts for volume and more on this website: http://www.alekz.net/archives/333

6.  Changing System Volume Settings

Run /opt/SUNWut/bin/utsettings and a configuration window will open allowing you to change the volume level along with other options such as bass, treble and balance. A volume level of 15 is the recommended setting.

I found some additional helpful information regarding Removable Storage on the SunRays...

Locate a removable drive: (after it has been automatically mounted)
Run /opt/SUNWut/bin/utdiskadm -l at the terminal to get a list of all your mounted drives

> /opt/SUNWut/bin/utdiskadm -l
Device     Partition     Mount Path
------     ---------     ----------
disk2      disk2p0
disk2      disk2p1       /tmp/SUNWut/mnt/charlieg/cruzer_0

Unmount a removable drive: (when you're done using it)
Run /opt/SUNWut/bin/utdiskadm -r [device name]

> /opt/SUNWut/bin/utdiskadm -r disk2
disk2 is ready for unplugging

Be sure to unmount a drive before removing it!
