Polycom

1.  Locations

The following locations have the capability of doing Polycom teleconferencing:

  • Evans Hall 204 (IP Address: 128.175.169.97) (HDX 8000 HD)
    • Setup: H.323 and SIP are enabled.

2.  Help

You can find a very detailed documentation at Polycom(PDF). If you need any help or are having difficulties with the the setup please contact use through the Help Request System.

3.  Usage of Polycom

There should be a sheet in each room which describes the basic steps on how to use the Polycom. Look for it. If it's not there please contact us to get it replaced.

To power up the system make sure the hardware is running and press the on button (top right) on the remote control.

3.1  Answering a call

Simply press the green call button on the remote control.

3.2  Placing a call

  1. From the Home screen select Place a Call
  2. In the dialing field, enter the dialing information. This can take almost any format such as IP address, SIP, DNS name etc.

4.  Using Xmeeting (MAC OSX) with Polycom

A remote person can use Xmeeting on his/her PC to call the Polycom setup and participate in a conference. The only information the other person needs to know is the IP address of the Polycom which is stated at the bottom of the screen on the home screen of the Polycom (Hit the home button to get there anytime). During the installation process Xmeeting is going to ask for other setup servers like gatekeeper. None of these are needed and can just be skipped (Choose don't use gatekeeper). Once setup is complete simply enter the IP and hit enter or press the call button. The Polycom will then receive a call which you can pick up and start the conference.

5.  Using an iPad with Polycom

There is an App for the iPad which makes it possible to connect to the Polycom with the iPad. As with most Apple software, the setup is straight forward and should be self explaining.

6.  Using Adobe Connect with Polycom

Not tested- Integrating Adobe Connect with Polycom is possible with a personally-hosted (not hosted by Adobe) Connect server or with Adobe Managed Services customers. However, there is the limitation that the call will only work in one direction. Voice and video will be received from to Connect via Polycom, but not vise-versa. Also, the Polycom video output has to be converted to 640x480 VGA 20 fps. Better integration may be available in with future versions of Adobe Connect. source- Adobe Forums

7.  Using Bluejeans with Polycom

This has not been evaluated yet. The price for a pay-per-use is $0.59 per participant minute. This allows a participant to use Skype to call the conference (with video support).

8.  Ekiga (Not recommended)

This is Linux & Windows client. We have evaluated it but experienced a lot of crashes (due to video problems) with version 3.2.7. The software is easy to use and you can call the Polycom with using "h323:ip_address" or "sip:ip_address" as the calling address. (Where ip_address is the IP address of the polycom)

9.  Using Skype in EVN204

In order to use Skype, the MAC display must be turned on. At the podium, press the ON button in the Display box. After the button stops blinking, press the PC button followed by the MINI button. You should now see the screen from the MAC. Skype should automatically launch and login to the ece1skype username.
