The Women in Engineering Mentoring Program
The Women in Engineering Steering Committee is hoping YOU will volunteer to mentor incoming female graduate students in the college of engineering. Each mentor will be assigned a few first year students to help with the transition to graduate school. We are intentionally planning to match mentors with mentees from different majors so that the first year students (and mentors) can meet and form relationships with women from other departments. The intention is to build more of a community and support network between women across the college of engineering.
Some responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Contacting your mentee in the upcoming weeks before classes start and answering any questions they might have about life as a graduate student at UD.
- Attending the Welcome Pizza Lunch on September 10 from 12:00-1:30pm in Perkins to meet your mentee.
- Actively interacting with your mentee (meeting up for lunch, planning coffee breaks, etc...)
- Encouraging your mentee to attend WIE sponsored events such as guest speakers, coffee breaks, and career workshops.
- And most importantly, be encouraging, upbeat, and supportive of your mentee during their very stressful 1st year of graduate school!
If you are interesting in mentoring an incoming female graduate student please respond to Melissa St. Amand at mstamand@udel.edu by no later than August 6, 2010. In your response please include your name, email address, and major.

The first CIS Dintinguished Lecture of Spring 2009 will feature Dr. Valentina Salapura, a high achiever in the field of supercomputing. Not only is Dr. Salapura a multiple award-winning researcher, she also has a leadership role in many select professional organizations. As she is a researcher at IBM, those interested in a career in the industry are particularly encouraged to attend the talk. It will be a fantastic opportunity to meet such an inspiring role model (and of course catch up with other CISters after the winter break).
The Dintinguished Lecture will be Feb 4th, 3:15pm in Gore Hall 116. Please see details of the event

CISters is proud to present a panel discussion on undergraduate CIS course selection for the spring semester. If you want to take a CIS course but not sure which is best for your academic plans, this panel discussion is for you.
Time and place: Tuesday 11/25 4:30pm - 6pm Smith 220
We have three GREAT panelists. Professor Harvey is in charge of the undergrad curriculum so he really knows best. Conor Gilsenan is a CIS senior, and he can talk from a been-there persepctive. Oana Tudor is a CIS grad student, but she was an undergrad at UDel and she was a panelist for the same event in the past. So there will be plenty of good advice.
October 29
You are cordially invited to meet Sreedevi Sampath, our distinguished CISters alum, and talk about academia job hunting after her SIG-SYS talk on Wednesday. All are welcome, you don't have to be a CISter:
Wednesday Oct 29th 3pm - 4pm Smith 426 Proposed focus of discussion: Job and career in academia
Sreedevi is currently Assistant Professor in Univerity of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Those of us who are applying for faculty positions are especially encouraged to join the meeting. As someone who had succeeded in the job application process, she will be an invaluable source of insights.
October 31
This Friday 10/31 will be our monthly lunch gathering. This time we are staying on campus with a purpose: to brainstorm.
We will soon apply for funding from Google's RISE Program (http://www.google.com/corporate/diversity/rise/index.html). We think our organization, though informal, is a good match for the RISE Program. With your input, together we can define what goals we share and with what activities we want to achieve those goals. Needless to say, the better our brainstorming session, the better our application proposal, and the better the chance we garner Google's support.
To keep our brains working, there will be pizzas served!
