The candle that got thirsty
In
a way, this activity is the opposite of the previous two activities where higher
air pressure inside the container kept the water out. Here, lower air
pressure inside the container will suck some water in.
You will need a tall glass container, a shallow bowl and a candle.
1. Fill the bowl with 1/2 inch of water. Optionally, add a few drops of food coloring and mix well.
2. Light a candle and keep it in the middle of the bowl.
3. Place the tall glass container over the candle all the way down (the glass container should be resting on the bowl).
4.
As the oxygen inside the glass container runs out, and the candle is
about to extinguish, you will see the (colored) water get pulled inside
the glass container.
5. Soon the water inside the glass container is much higher than the water in the bowl.
