Overview of the Company/Research Lab Visit and Journal Summary

The students will actively share in the interviewing of people they meet at the companies and research labs they visit, as well as watch demos, and listen to talks describing various projects at the institution. Upon return from the visits, each student will write a journal summary of their experience, addressing the questions below.

Objectives

The goal of the journal summary writing experience is to reflect on the activities of the company/research lab visit, and to gain some writing experience.

Instructions for Writing a Journal Summary

The summary should include the following:
  1. short summary paragraph of the activities at the visit, focusing on technical content discussed,
  2. a personal reflection on what you learned about computing in the world that you were unaware of prior to the visit, (1-2 paragraphs)
  3. personal reflection on what you learned about how computer scientists in the real world use software tools. (1-2 paragraphs)
The summary should be typed and emailed to the instructors within 3 days after the visit, in pdf format.

Evaluation and Grading of the Journal Summary

  1. Short Summary of activity --- Demonstrates that the student was actively participating and listening on the visit.
  2. Reflection on computing in the real world --- Critically thought about the experience, what they learned about work the people are doing in computing,
  3. Reflection on how the people use software tools in their daily work
  4. Free of spelling, typo, and grammar errors
  5. Clear, concise writing style, that is technical and not conversational
