Beginning in 1968 I spent parts of three summers teaching short courses at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. I wandered the country, its holy places, Gaza, the West Bank and the deserts. It's been over three decades since these pictures were taken and Israel is far different today. I restored these old photos as best I could.
Before 1967 Jerusalem was divided between Arabic East Jerusalem and Jewish West Jerusalem. In 1968 when I took these pictures, East Jerusalem still had a distinctive local charm. Today the Jerusalem ridge line is thick with apartment blocks and the Jewish Quarter is upscale gentrified.
The Old City of Jerusalem was still being cleaned up when I first arrived. There was lots of rubble and loose stones, especially in the neglected Jewish Quarter. These pictures show scenes from the Damascus Gate on the way to the Western ("Wailing") Wall of the Temple Mount. Note the Aramaic writing on the Wall.

These pictures show an archeological excavation next to the Temple Mount. When I took these pictures in 1968, the dig was down to the Second Temple of CE 70. Modern pictures show the gaping holes completely filled. This and other projects are managed by the Israeli Ministry of Antiquities in cooperation with universities and research groups.

Israel is a small country; you can get from Dan near the Lebanon border to Eilat at the Gulf of Aqaba in a day. Note the Mediterranean coast line, which is now laced with luxury hotels. The checkpoint was at the Gaza border. The only rail line in the country was between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, but everybody took the buses then and now.

There were so many kids in the Old City, some herding goats and others just hanging out. One old man didn't want his picture taken and chased me right out the Damascus Gate. The man with the tea tray makes rounds to the local shops on call.
