SSH Introduction

The first step is to download, the file is available at this location. This is a non-commercial version, which basically means you can use this for doing school related activities.

Now that you have downloaded the file, you can start the installation process. Find the icon that looks like this:

Double click on this icon to start the installation. There will be several screens that appear and disapear before you are asked to do anything. Throughout the installation for all of the screens that appear choosing next should be sufficient for normal use. If you want to change any of the options feel free to do so. The first screen that should appear should look like this:

Click next to continue. The next screen to appear will be like this:

This is the agreement for non-commercial use. Agree by clicking yes. The next screen asks where you want to install the program and looks like this:

If you want to place the program somwhere else feel free to do so, otherwise just click on next. After that you will see a screen that looks like this:

This will install a folder on your start menu. If you want to call it somthing else go for it, otherwise click next. The next screen shows the program options:

I don't recommend touching these, just let it install what it wants. Click next to continue. After this it will ask you to start the installation:

Click next to begin. As it installs you will see a progress screen that looks somthing like this:

After that is all complete you should see this:

The installation is now complete, so click finish. You will NOT have to restart the computer. To start using SSH click here to look at the use instructions.

To start using SSH, click on either the icon on your desktop or from your start menu. Once you click on the icon a window will appear that looks like this:

If you examine the top of this window you should see a button that looks like this:

Click on this button, and you will see another window appear that looks like this:

Enter in pegasus.montclair.edu and YOUR username into the boxes. When you are done press connect. After pressing connect you should see this:

Without getting too technical, this is just information about pegasus that SSH will use. It is called a public key, and it is used to make the connection secure. Press yes to agree to this. One important thing to note is that you don't really have a lot of time to connect, only about 5 seconds. If you see this:

You will have to try again to login. The public key should only be required one time, so that message will not appear for pegasus ever again. Once you can connect you can see this:

Enter your password in this box, and then press ok. Once you do login, you should see this:

This is similar to what you see when you connect via telnet or puTTY. You can now type, or do whatever you want to in this window. With this version of SSH it is also possible to use a graphical FTP client. Locate the buttons that look like this:

The button on the left will open another terminal, but the button on the right will open a SFTP client, which is a secure FTP. When clicked a window will open:

On the left you should see your local computer, and on the right you should see the files stored on pegasus. You can easily drag items from both sides. This makes getting things a lot easier than command line FTP!. When you are done it is important to logout using the button, or the x.
