SSH can be configured so that you can use the Backspace key. Here's a description of how to do that.

1. Open the Edit Menu and click on Settings. This is what you get:
   
2. On the left side, click the Keyboard option. See picture below.
3. On the right side, click the "Backspace sends Delete" checkbox
   
4. Click OK
