Software Architectures for Neural Networks, Artificial Immune Systems and Complex Adaptive Systems

Our current research deals with developing software architectures and design information models for a variety of computational intelligence models, including neural networks, fuzzy neural networks, artificial immune systems, evolutionary systems and complex adaptive systems (CAS). We are particularly interested in the recognition, learning, training, comparison, computational and software design aspects of such models of artificial intelligence.

Our previous research has dealt with problems of network and service management within distributed networking environments. Connection management, bandwidth management, security management and quality of services management are important aspects of ATM-based virtual networks. Our work involves object-oriented UML-Fusion specification, design and implementation of service and network management environments within the OSI, Internet, TMN, ODP and CORBA abstract frameworks. Our current emphasis is on multimedia QoS and connection services and management using the above-mentioned methodologies.

ATM-based Virtual Private Networks

We had been also concerned with design of connection and bandwidth management system architectures for ATM-based logical private network services. Specifically, we are interested in distributed management systems that allow users to build real-time on-demand logical private networks using the service provider and network provider management systems. Virtual services are specified and designed using the methodology of object-oriented software engineering. We are also concerned with interactions among the user, service provider and network provider management information systems.

Service and Network Management Architectures

We have constructed here generic service architecture using generic component models consistent with TINA-C. Generic service component and generic management components are developed first, followed by an architecture of a complex service. Multimedia Service QoS Architecture is developed using the generic models. Object-Oriented specification and design methodology is used throughout.

Service Management for Multimedia Applications

In this research based the generic service and management architecture, we had introduced Multimedia Service and Management Architecture using multimedia service APIs over CORBA platform. The underlying network was assumed to be an ATM. The multimedia QoS and connection service components as well as component interactions between the service and management planes across the TMN layers are developed. The multimedia QoS parameters are mapped from the user requests down to service and network management components and finally to ATM switch element SNMPv2 MIB objects.

Security Management Systems for Virtual Networks

Interaction among user, service and network provider systems to provide virtual connection, bandwidth and service quality management to end-users is critically important and is often highly proprietary. Well-developed security procedures and protocols are needed to insure the security and integrity of these services. Our research in this area was concerned with architectures for authorization, access control and confidentiality procedures. We are also concerned with security protocols and construction of a generic security server.
The goal of this research has been to provide real-time, on-demand, fast reconfiguration services for battlefield communication networks. Dynamic connection and configuration are being explored as well as the quality of management services.

Mobile Agent and Component based Software Engineering Pattern Based Software Design

In this research, we develop software architectures using mobile components and middleware services. This architecture is applied to various distributed software solutions including network connection service management. We also investigate the intelligence and scheduling properties of such mobile components.
