Abel Licon

B.S. in Computer Science University of Texas at El Paso, 2007

Me in a Nutshell

My Computer Science endeavor started when I was advised my freshman year. My advisor asked me, "Well Abel, do you like computers?" Sure, I thought, I had one, I liked using it. So with a nod, and having no idea what Computer Science was, she enrolled me in the Introductory to Computer Science class.

Well, it's turned out that I did like computers, not just as a user but as a creator. I eventually earned my bachelors degree at UTEP. I had a wonderful time there. I was fortunate enough to land a job as a Teaching Assistant. Probably the most fun I've ever had in the class room. Soon after, I was asked to join the Global Computing Lab with Dr. Taufer. Joining her team has been one of the best desicions I have ever made. I am now working on Masters here at UDEL with the help and direction of my still advisor Dr. Taufer, yes, I followed her here.

My research interests include applications of high performance computing in the area of bioinformatics. As an undergrad I was the lead developer of the RNAVLab project, which was a tool that enables scientist to predict, commpare, align and analyze RNA Secondary Structures.

You can find more about my research, education, and business in my long vitae (pdf format)
