"On the eighth day God, whose attention to detail knows no bounds,
devised the ultimate practical joke. He began to place in the freshly
smoking earth countless millions of fossils, designed to simulate the
former existence of myriad unknown life-forms. He made the rocks
themselves look a thousand times older than they really were, and by
making the continents drift slightly to and fro ensured that silly
maps would be drawn, showing them near together, with Africa cheek
by jowl with South America.

Best of all, he buried enormous bones in the ground, so that
respectable museums would featuredaft fibreglass mock-ups of
giant lizards, and primary school children would have something
to enthuse about. With painstaking care he painted the stars and
galaxies on to the night sky, in reality only a few hundred
yards away, and made them twinkle distantly.
