The Rocky Horror Picture Show is several things. One one level, it's a delightfully charming tale of two heroic young kids on a night out, who are kidnapped by a cross dressing, bisexual, mad scientist. He's building a monster for immoral purposes, and wants their clothes.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show, by itself, is a movie; a campy, musical, spoof of early science fiction and horror movies. The ``plot'' ridicules conformity and conventionality. It promotes flamboyance, individual expression, alternative lifestyles, sexual promiscuity, alternate sexuality, rebellion against authority, and rejection of society. Yet there are elements of karmic justice as well. Furthermore, the outragous imagery and oddly paced dialog make it a perfect framework for audience satire. People yell back at the movie, insert dialog, sing along, dance in the aisles, throw stuff, and generally have a good time. This has made it the most popular cult film of all time. Usually, a local cast will act in sync with the movie. The full theater experiance has been compared to the TV show "Mystery Science Theater 3000", without censors, brakes, or sanity.

The show may also be viewed as a musical comedy about celery.
