The High School Women's (Programming Of the Web Rocks -- POWER) Summer Experience is a program sponsored by the National Science Foundation and organized by three female faculty in Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Delaware. Here's a brief summary of the goals of POWER. High school women will be introduced to college level computer science through a supportive yet academically challenging programming project and classroom experience, exciting real-life projects directed to their interests, and female role models in computer science.

  • Learn Java for web page development
  • Get involved in interesting, fun group projects
  • Interact with female computer science faculty and college students
  • Build your self confidence in computer skills
  • Learn more about information technology careers
  • Receive $1000 and certificate upon completion of the program
  • Meet high school women from other schools interested in computers
  • Get a step ahead in preparing for college level computer science
  • Take advantage of free university athletic and pool facilities
  • Obtain free access to UD's outdoor pool

Dates & Times: The program runs for 8 weeks beginning Monday, June 25 and ending Friday, August 17. The program begins each day at 8:30am and ends at 12:30pm.

Who Should Participate: Any high school students completing their sophomore or junior year are eligible to apply. NO PRIOR PROGRAMMING EXPERIENCE is assumed. The program is limited to 20 students due to laboratory resources.

How to Apply: Students are invited to apply by submitting a current transcript, one academic recommendation (by a teacher or guidance counselor), and a completed application by April 15, 2001.
