UDel BIO
I was an EE undergraduate student at University of Delaware from fall 1985
until spring of 1989 (when I graduated!). When I was not busy with
my EE classwork I spent my time (including summers) doing research and
lab work. From winter 1986 to fall 1987 I worked as an undergraduate
researcher for Dave Farber. In our lab in 131 Evans Hall I ran SCO
Xenix on several IBM PC/AT's. I had fun porting the MMDF mail system to
the PCs, working on ethernet drivers for Dave Crocker, attempting to
port M. Rose's ISODE system to the PCs (with Ron Minnich), and trying to
help Gary Delp get his MEMNET hardware programmed and wire-wrapped.
After Dave Farber left UDel for his new job at UPenn, I took up a job with
the EE/CIS Computer Lab (then under the direction of Dan Grim). While
a member of the EE/CIS Labstaff I resided in 113 Evans Hall and helped
users by answering their technical questions about the EE/CIS systems.
I also helped to ensure that the VAX systems kept running, the MMDF mailers
ran properly, and disk space did not run out.
Some other interesting EE/CIS labstaff trivia relating to me:
- I was the (guilty?) party who brought USENET News to UDEL. I
set up an NNTP link to louie.udel.edu (then a VAX-11/780) and
we stored News on an old RM03 disk drive. Later I helped
Steve Singles set up USENET at the computing center (e.g. udccvax1).
- I installed and configured the first cisco terminal servers in
Evans Hall (evans-ts1 and evans-ts2). We used them to replace the
old PDP-11/45 based terminal switch.
- I helped beta test the Mt Xinu's MORE/BSD Unix OS on UDel's VAX systems.
- I spent a lot of time getting the EE/CIS "nce" wiring database up
to date so that we'd know how Evans was wired. Wonder if anyone
uses "nce" any more?
- I was one of the first people who got the job of going up to the
attic of Evans Hall to install and check on antennas for Dave Mills.
There is some interesting old graffiti up there, not to mention
some real live bats!!!
I graduated from UDel in spring of 1989 and left Newark at the end of
June 1989. I received my masters and doctoral degrees in computer
science from Washington University in St. Louis Missouri. For more info,
