The As Yet Unnamed Programming Contest
April 17, 1999
It's Over!
The contest has come and gone. We got started at 1pm and ended
at 4:00pm. Here's some post-contest information:
Intro:
On Saturday, April 17th, the
ACM student
chapter at the University of Delaware will be sponsoring
a programming contest. The contest will run from 1:00pm to
4:00pm in Pearson 114/116.
Food (probably pizza) will be provided afterwards.
Any and all are invited to attend.
Rules:
For the most part, the contest will follow
ACM rules. Each university can bring up to 5 teams
consisting of 3 (or fewer) individuals. The 5 team limit may
be lifted later on, depending on how many schools decide
to come. Each team may have, at most, 1 graduate student
who has not earned a master degree, nor has completed 2
years of grad school.
Participants may bring any manuals, or program listings they
choose. The only electronic toy participants can use is
the computer. They may not
bring in things like diskettes,
calculators (including watch calculators), etc.
Slightly more detailed rules can be found here.
The contest will be held in a UN*X environment, using X-windows.
Participants may program in C, or C++. Vi, emacs, and pico will
all be available as editors. If you have no idea what those
are, try pico.
Registration:
The contest costs $5/contestant to help
defray costs (food, etc). Click here
for the registration form. I need to know you're coming
no later than April 10th. Money can be sent via mail, or
you can cough it up the day of the contest. The address for
money to go to is:
ACM Chapter
c/o Dept of CIS
103 Smith Hall
University of Delaware
Newark, DE 19716
Checks outta be made out to Association for Computing Machinery
Tentative Schedule:
- Meet in Pearson 104 about 12:00 noon to go over some brief things
- Sometime before 1:00-- A small practice session
- 1:00-4:00pm the contest proper
- A little after 4, the results will be announced, food provided,
prizes given out.
Prizes:
These are the prizes I can guarentee right now.
- First place: $40/team member
- Second place: $20/team member
- Third place: $10/team member
That's the minimum. They may go up by the time the contest
rolls around.
Directions to campus:
But wait, that's not all:
The
University of Delaware has
an excellent graduate program in
Computer Science. If you're considering attending
grad school, send me some email and I'll see about setting
up a campus tour for you, meeting a professor, etc. Also,
as a current grad student, I'll be more than happy
to answer any questions you have about what grad school
is like here.
