The machine room is home to all our central servers (web: huey, e-mail: louie, computation: stimpy),
as well as clusters for various research groups, and general servers for departmental use.

We run a predominately Sun Microsystems branded computers with Solaris and Linux as our preferred operating systems. Many people run Windows XP or Windows Vista and connect via our Samba server to access their Unix files and our print servers.
Our network is primarily built off of Cisco and HP brand switch hardware.

Important Servers

Our most critical servers are in a locked rack. We have several tape robots and manual tape drives to allow us to perform daily backups of servers and computers belonging to the departments.

Tape Drives:

The ECE/CIS Research Lab is also home to the Network Time Protocol.

Clusters

We run one cluster for class/academic work. Students taking CISC372 use the cars cluster (called this because the servers are named after car manufacturers). It is a rack of eight Dell Power Edge servers. The other Dell servers seen in the picture are for academic and research use.

The following four clusters are owned by research groups in the ECE and CIS departments.

Power/Cooling

The machine room in Evans 116 is cooled by two EDPAC air conditioners. With hundreds of servers running at high loads at all times, the room would reach temperatures that would destroy electronic components if we didn't have a means to cool the large room.

Battery backup is provided to critical servers for temporary service in the event of a power outage.
